A Villa residing Doha’s West bay, Zen house is far more than any regular home. The philosophy behind the design is primarily based on the principles of Feng Shui which promotes harmony between opposite forces.

Upon entry of the Villa you’ll notice the open concept floor plan. Light is an important element to residential design which is why the south facade walls include large sliding doors that diffuse the sunlight within the interior. Furthermore, as a member of the family is hearing impaired, creating visually open spaces with circulation allows them to feel more comfortable within the space. Open spaces are crucial as they can’t hear they rely a lot on their other senses in this case sight.

 

The materials used in each room are inspired by

the five elements; earth, water, fire, metal and wood. These materials play a big role because through materiality, we can further connect to our four senses and be fully aware of the space. For example, wood is frequently used as it engages the human senses. To summarize, Zen house aim is to make an individual aware of certain aspects of reality, such as the passage of time.
